Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire ft. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown, EL-P – The Last Huzzah

I’m kinda speechless. This is like the indie/internet rap version of “Flava In Your Ear” (hence the video reference) or, like, “Make It Rain” for you young bols. Despot (who is currently working on music after a hiatus with beats by Ratatat) opens with internal rhyme gymnastics while shuffling Lucky Charms (Irish?), Kool A.D. (first half of Das Racist) seems pleased-enough to be rapping pretty straight-shot punchliners with a golfclub, while Heems (other half) probably missed the shoot? So they edited him in – he’s rapping from a video in a video (no Xzibit). Is Dap next-level cooking? Awno. Danny Brown spits gun-play rhymes better than any self-professed gangster rapper on the charts right now. But… does anyone know what “Blunt’s Paul Bunyan” means? El-P, the second white rapper on the track, who is actually the best. rapper. everrr. to some people, reminds me why those people have a good point. By the time Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire comes back on his own track, he has successfully painted ‘Huzzah’ on a fat booty and, shirtless, spits a raw couplet referencing Equilibrium.

Each of these artists have had their share of internet spectators dismissing them as jokes. I don’t entirely blame those snap-judgement makers – depending on your vantage point and context, it can be hard to take an “internet rapper” seriously off the strength of a few YouTubes from the latest rap blog tryna break the next hype artist. But wheat separates from chaff and real recognize real – this track should kill all doubt that these dudes are anything but serious. It’s a movie. It’s a movement. It’s a moviement.

Shortcuts gives next-wave the mainstage

The rap game’s kinda exciting right now. We’re in a world where guys like Lil B and Odd Future can already be considered front runners of an even more nuanced and “internetty” emerging rap scene. If you’re in New York, you can catch some of this new ish first hand. Santos Party House pops off on September 8th with a new party, Shortcuts, curated by Himanshu (of Das Racist), Despot (of Def Jux), and True Panther Sounds (Of True Panther Sounds). Being privy to these dudes, I know it’s going to be an exciting scene for dope sounds to find their home in New York.

The first edition brings together SPACEGHOSTPURRP for his first New York show. Miami native and quintessential “internet rapper”, you can expect a stream of bass-rattling drums and ticey vocals from his huge mixtape Blvcklvnd Rvdix 66.6. Opening up is A$AP Rocky, fast-rising voice of Harlem, hot off the success of Deep Purple & new singe “Peso” (above).

Das Racist and GHE20 G0TH1K will be providing DJ sets (peep Venus X cameo in “Peso” video at 1:15). Swag?

Swag. Info, music, tickets here.

VANITY JUKEBOX VOL. 3 : #MONTAGE

This mix is the soundtrack to imagining myself keeping cool amidst short lived romance gone bad [#AMOURFOU].

It blossoms with giddy teen angst and utter joy, transcends into non-reciprocated loyalty, which itself leads to fear and insecurity. It inevitably concludes with heartbreak, sadness and regret. Act accordingly<3″

The King

Today we remember the smoothest criminal, the consummate triple threat, the undisputed heavyweight King of Pop, Michael Jackson. It’s hard to say when we’ll next see an artist with such a profound and lasting effect on the world over. But that next torch-bearer will undoubtedly owe their legacy to Michael. Thanks for all the music and memories, MJ!

Bonus: James Brown brings Michael Jackson and Prince on stage (1983).

Dedicated To Irene…

They’re telling me the MTA is gonna shut down the subway system tomorrow at noon, which is funny, because that’s only 3 more trains than usual weekend service. In all seriousness I called my mom to ask what supplies she needed and she told me “Oreos and Chips Ahoy”. That’s Mom. One friend told me he’s going to Gamestop and buying a bunch of videogames to beat (pause?). I stopped game-playing literally and metaphorically a few years ago, so music be my savior. Because I’m an awful person, I plan to listen to these storm-themed songs while the wind tries to huff, puff, and blow my house down. Perchance you’ll find me singin’ in the rain (you see what I did there?).
