CORN FLAKES ARE NOT HOOD

In an effort to cash in on the streetwear craze, Kellog's has licensed their various cereal brands and mascots to create a label called "Under the Hood," thus cementing streetwear's imminent demise.

I'm almost speechless. I mean come on. REALLY?

This must be what the licensing conversation sounded like:

Marketing douchebag 1: What else can we leverage with the cool, urban crowds?
Marketing douchebag 2: Hmm, well, black people love cornflakes...
Marketing doucebage 1: Kellog's and black people, that's like a match made in heaven. Streetwear is big with these kids these days, what about Kellogs Streetwear?
Marketing douchebag 2: Yes! All over prints and cartoon characters! And let's find cool kids with tattoos to model the crap, tattoos and afros, that's cool, right?
Marketing douchebag 1: Totally.

This dood is laughing like, "Damn! What am I doing wearing this shit?!?"

Who Says That Theatre Is Only For People Who Read?

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

I stand with my friends in a dimly lit open space as a man in a suit appears on stage, running as fast as he can on a treadmill. Soon he is running through people, through furniture, through walls. There are no barriers (to human emotion?)

Welcome to "Fuerzabruta," meaning "brute force", the new interactive masterpiece from the Argentinian group behind the popular, long-running De La Guarda show. There is no clear narrative, but a few recurring themes if you look closely (or Google endlessly). For the most part, I saw the show as an examination of the dramatic dance between tension and release.

The treadmill guy would later run up to me and break a prop over my head, which exploded into hundreds of tiny pieces, scattering all over the people next to me who were being showered with water by the DJ. This is all part of it; you're supposed to touch the actors - and the props - and enjoy the experience with everyone standing next to you. Everything about Fuerzabruta is meant to be enjoyed with all the senses. The various scenes seem to have nothing in common; the actors are in the air, on the ground, and underwater, but always reaching, always wanting, continuously trying to get to something they cannot have.

At one point, an actual pool of water is lifted down over the crowd as beautiful, barely dressed women glide over your head, teasing and playfully menacing the crowd. We stand there on our toes, awe-struck and childlike, and as we reach up to graze them with our fingers, we know exactly how the dude on the treadmill feels.

That is the immensity of Fuerzabruta; there is no real narrative, but a crazy Friday night filled with aerial acrobatics, dance, theatre, and rave. At the end, if you wish, you can get absolutely soaking wet, while pink, purple, red, green and blue strobe lights spin all around you, and the actors join the audience for their final curtain. The entire experience is so primitive- at times focusing entirely on the body's reaction to what is happening on stage- such a great alternative from a "regular" night at the theatre. It is this celebration of carnal beauty that makes this show unique, to say the least; exhilarating is more like it.

Fuerzabruta plays at the Daryl Roth Theatre on Union Square, get tickets for half price before the promotion ends on April 20th (420!)

Behind the Curtain Photos

Monday, April 14, 2008

Armen's show was a great success. Though the photographs varied in style they all came together in an elegant way once on the walls. The room was filled with positive energy and part of the reason was because Armen was able to bring so many different types of people together... there were people from my high school, Tisch heads, street heads, fashionistas, Russian ballet dancers, old, young, lame, cool, seemed like everyone was represented. Here are a couple of photos, more in the gallery.

Behind the Curtain - Armen Danilian

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Opening in conjunction with the launch of the Kirov Ballet’s Spring 2008 season is Behind the Curtain, the debut exhibition of our friend Armen Danilian.

The exhibition will consist of more than two dozen photographs documenting nearly a decade of dance from the singular vantage point of the young artist. Accompanying this event is an exclusive catalogue that compiles his most poignant images of the Kirov Ballet.

Try to make it out it's a one day event this Monday on the 14th.

BLU AND EXILE - BLUE COLLAR WORKER

In my continued indie effort, I gotta throw some love to Blu, a super talented emcee with a whole bunch of swag repping my hometown LA. He makes a bunch of music that just puts you in a good mood. I especially love this joint because it speaks to me, and for anybody out there on the grind you gotta feel it.

If you're not familiar, get up on his shit, he's coming up big from the Westcoast underground. Dropping knowledge, yes sir!

ATMOSPHERE - GUARANTEES

With all our 'Ye posts of late, I have to give some shine to the underground cats, to the doods with skills who aren't gettin crazy paid yet.

Say what you will about Slug and Atmosphere, but I've been a fan for a minute now. His latest joint, "Guarantees" off the album When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold is a single shot of Slug rhyming from the heart.

With all the blown out, stylized production for most music videos, I appreciate the simplicity and intimate nature of the video. Not that I don't love titties and diamonds as much as the next guy, but....

YOU MUST CREATE

Thursday, April 03, 2008

A part of being a creative person simply boils down to the sheer mental satisfaction of putting in time and effort for a project, and then having a real and tangible piece of work to show for your efforts, whether it's a tee, garment, jewelry piece, or otherwise.

Instant gratification can't be overrated.

On a psychological level, I'm sure that most people sitting at a desk job get frustrated for the fact that there is really very little to show for their personal contributions and hard work.

What I have found over time is that making shit makes me happy. Creation is powerful, no matter on what level. Take my desk. [As you can tell, I sprang for the super luxe Staples joint, dropping $90 for the whole shebang delivered to BK]. This is what the box and shit looked like.

It looked like, well, shit in a box.

Building this bitch was not as easy as those Staples commercials make it seem, with that deceptive, red "Easy" button of theirs. Anyways, after assembling the various panels, poles, and dowels with Machine, Wood, and Cam Screws, the finished product might have been less than spectacular, but hell, it was a finished product.

Needless to say, this was the best part of the instructions.....

WHERE BROOKLYN AT?

I apologize for the hiatus, but I have been sans internet since I moved. I recently got my ass out of Manhattan, across the great divide and landed in the home of Biggie, Jay, Spike, and a whole bunch of other people who are known by their first and last names too. Oh yeah, and the hipsters, punks, thugs, art fucks and blue collar grinders. They out here too.

Straight up, Brooklyn is a pretty dope place. I have spent the majority of my time in New York living in Manhattan, thinking I would never live off the island. But after my boy convinced me to make the move, I have been pretty content out here. I realized that there's this crazy, illogical fear that Manhattanites have of the other Boroughs. But for a downtown kid like myself, it's literally the equivalent of living in Midtown, but with way more space and neighbors rocking tattoos and skinny jeans instead of button downs and polos.

So all in all, I'm pretty excited to be out in BK. The vibe is much chiller, standard of living is cheaper, and the creative community is alive and vibrant. And the ridiculous rooftop don't hurt either.

Fuck tequila, I'll take a Brooklyn Sunrise for my happy hour....
